Nicholas Vreeland, once immersed in a life of luxury, chose to become a Tibetan Buddhist monk. As the grandson of the iconic Vogue editor Diana Vreeland and a protégé of renowned photographer Irving Penn, Nicholas experienced a profound transformation after encountering a Tibetan master who was one of the Dalai Lama’s instructors. This meeting led him to abandon his opulent lifestyle and move to a monastery in India, where he dedicated fourteen years to studying Buddhism. In a surprising turn, Nicholas returned to photography to assist his fellow monks in reconstructing their monastery. Recently, the Dalai Lama appointed him as the Abbot of the monastery, marking him as the first Westerner to achieve such a prestigious role in Tibetan Buddhist history.
