A year after his parents’ divorce, ten-year-old Jared Marshall’s world has been turned upside down. His father has become consumed by his work, and his mother has relocated them from Iowa to California to live with her mother and pursue a new job. In school, Jared’s class is tasked with writing letters to U.S. soldiers stationed in Bosnia. One of these letters reaches Sergeant First Class Vince Carerra, a compassionate man who grew up without a father and experienced his own divorce due to his wife’s infidelity during his military service. Vince forms a bond with Jared, offering him guidance through their correspondence. When Vince’s unit returns to Fort Sebastian, he visits Jared’s home and is warmly received. He becomes Jared’s personal baseball coach and, with a little help from Cupid, starts dating Jared’s mother. However, they agree to keep things casual, as Vince may soon be redeployed.
