Twenty-year-old Cal returns to Britain from France after learning about his mother’s illness. Upon his arrival in Bristol, he finds the city struggling with severe economic challenges due to the global financial crisis, marked by increasing poverty, crime, and frequent riots and looting. His return is far from welcoming; his ailing mother remains staunchly homophobic and rejects Cal, who is now openly gay. Meanwhile, his Auntie Jane, living in a dilapidated council house, numbs her stagnant life with alcohol funded by welfare and makes unsettling attempts to seduce her nephew. As Cal navigates this changed environment, he encounters a young student in need of assistance. This act of goodwill inadvertently entangles him with a dangerous drug-dealing pimp, setting off a race against time to reconcile with his mother and leave the city as soon as possible. This gripping narrative explores a family ensnared in poverty, anger, and confusion, yet still yearning for love, respect, and acceptance.
